Quite frankly, Church history has always seemed detached, dry, and forgettable - even though I don`t want it to be! Retaining information about key events and people that have impacted the Church has always been laborious for me, to say the least. Mr. Jones` work is a refreshing change in studying Church history. His subtle humor (in no way disrespectful, just pun-filled and funny) and his polished way of transitioning from one era or event to another makes Church history easy to study - as the title promises. Maps, side-bar quotations, web site recommendations, and review learning activities at the close of each chapter help raise the interest level and "recall quotient." Each of the twelve eras studied (A.D. 64 to 1999) begins with key names, events and terms to remember. Then the text within the chapter expounds on those key items. There is also a leader`s guide in the last twenty pages of the book that supplies answers to the learning activities, extra discussion questions, suggestions for class activities and lesson plans (if used in a classroom setting), and resource recommendations. It is a 13-week course for high schoolers and adults that really makes understanding Church history a joy, not a drudgery of unrelated names and dates.
